How do your kids handle haircuts? My two year old son HATES them. Last year we had gone to get his haircut three times and there was no amount of candy bribes, screen time, or holding my hand that could make him happy while the stylist worked. He screamed the entire time.
Months went by, his hair started getting out of control so I decided to give him a haircut at home. I was so nervous but he actually loved it! He got to watch his favorite show, he sat in his own booster seat, and got a popsicle at the end.
Now he’s had several haircuts at home and I’ve saved hundreds of dollars. The “kids” place by us charges $35 for a haircut so for me, the at home trimmer was totally worth it!

Below are the step by step instructions on how I cut his hair. Hope you give it a try and let us know how it goes!
My supplies:
- Trimmer Kit
- Floor Protector
- Cordless Vacuum
- Cape (or use a blanket and hair clip like me)
I use this trimmer kit and it comes with tons of blade sizes, a comb, and a clean up brush. First, attach a #4 guard and trim all over. Start from the bottom by the neck and work the trimmer up. When you get to the front, start at the forehead and work your way back. I like my son’s hair shorter on the bottom and a little longer on top so starting with the #4 is perfect for the top and will start to get rid of excess hair.
Next, I attach the #3 guard and trim the bottom and sides. I start at the neck and move the trimmer up until I reach the crown of the head and then I pull away. This will create a fade look from the bottom to the top of the hair.
Lastly, the hard part. Up until now you’ve had guards on the trimmer so it’s been basically fool proof. Now you’ll need to take the trimmer off and create straight lines at the bottom of the neck line, the sideburns, and around the ears. To do the ears, fold the ears over and slowly get the little hairs.
For cleaning up, I recommend a Cordless Vacuum and putting down a floor protector before you start to help with loose hairs.
