If you are a parent of a child in school, it’s that time- you are starting to think about teacher Christmas gifts or even getting emails from room parents collecting money for teacher presents. Many parents find themselves searching for gifts to express gratitude and appreciation for teachers who often go above and beyond their call of duty.

I am a parent and former teacher! In this blog post, I give some ideas for what teachers really want for Christmas. You may have received a “favorites” list, maybe not. Let me tell you, spoiler alert, gift cards are ALWAYS a good plan.
Gift Cards
Yes, I had to start with the obvious, but it is true! Gift cards are simple, and effective, and ALWAYS welcomed. Teachers often spend their own money on supplies for the class and even students who need assistance. Providing them with gift cards to their favorite coffee shop, Target, restaurants allows them to pick out something for themselves for a change. If you ask any teacher, 9 out of 10 will say gift cards with a handmade card. I would check: Target, Walmart, Homegoods, TJ Maxx, Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, Amazon, and local restaurants.
Personalized Gifts
Teachers appreciate gifts that show thoughtfulness and consideration. Consider personalized gifts that add a special touch. I personally loved personalized stationery and sticky notes. As a teacher, you are constantly jotting things down or leaving notes for students and parents. I would try to avoid coffee cups, it is a cliche and I am sure your teacher already has a cabinet full. However, a monogrammed tote bag is useful and practical.
Classroom Supplies:
Teachers often spend their own money on classroom supplies to ensure a well supplied and engaging learning environment. This Christmas, help alleviate some of that burden by gifting classroom essentials. Consider items such as bulk markers, colored pencils, glue sticks, notebooks, or even a gift card to an office/teacher supply store. Practical gifts can make a significant impact on a teacher’s day-to-day responsibilities. I personally remember going to the teacher supply store at the start of every year and buying manipulatives and bulletin board decor.
Handmade Crafts:
One of the BEST gifts cost nothing! I still have a folder full of handwritten cards from students. Nothing like a sweet drawing or kind words from a student to bring holiday cheer. Besides cards, I once received a hand knitted scarf (!!), ornaments, and wreaths to name a few.
Food & Beverage:
Another cliche that is true, wine. Yes, I cannot speak for all teachers of course, but if you know your teacher enjoys wine, get them a bottle. Snacks are always fun to receive, think sweet and salty! I loved getting goodies from Trader Joes or local spots. If you are vacationing, pick up something local to your vacation spot.
Relaxation and Wellness:
Teaching can be a demanding profession, and stress is often part of the job. Help teachers unwind during the holiday break by giving gifts that promote relaxation and wellness. Spa gift certificates, nail salons (YES!), scented candles (if they like scents), or a cozy blanket are always welcomed.
This Christmas, think about what you would like to receive if you were a teacher (please no more coffee mugs to add to the cabinet). Thoughtful and meaningful gifts not only express gratitude but also inspire and uplift those who play a crucial role in shaping young minds. Celebrate the spirit of giving by honoring the educators who give so much of themselves throughout the year.
Are you a teacher? What do you like to receive?
